Celebrate...

2025 a year of celebrations. Our very 1st meeting of the Alderley History Group ever was in 2005. which means we have been a group for 20

years. We are very proud of how our wee group, which was started by Harold and Margaret Smith, inspired by the Alderley Landscape Project, which was commissioned by Manchester Museum 1995 -2005. In 20 years the group has grown and is very active  and what is most amazing are all the stories we have discovered,  and continue to unearth and as it is often said, "all roads lead to Alderley".

We are grateful for all the papers, photos and artefacts you have given to the group over the years. We have embraced modern technology, we zoom our meetings, and have a digital archive on a cloud, a website , over 1000 followers on Facebook,  as well as the extensive archive, we have collected  & are continuing to catalogue. We are especially grateful to St Philip & St James Church for their support.

Our next meeting, we are very pleased to welcome Diane Leitch to present to us her extensive research , on a very interesting lady called Emily Simon.

Diana Leitch, was awarded an MBE for services to Chemistry, former Deputy University Librarian at the University of Manchester and Associate Director of the John Rylands Library, a chemistry scholar , and has had a life-long interest in family and local history and has written many books and given talks on various of her research subjects.

Who was Emily Simon OBE?

the story of a Victorian woman of Manchester.

(Teaser, Emily and her family lived on Woodbrook Road in Alderley Edge.)

World War ll

We are currently researching, with the help of David Briggs (from Wilmslow History Society) and Denise Psalia, (our super historic researcher) all the WW ll soldiers whose names are commemorated on our war memorial. May 8th is the official commemoration of the  80th anniversary of end of the war. This continues the research compiled by Michael Scaife for the 100th anniversary of end of WW l.

We are planning a display about the local men, at the back of the  church, at the end of April for a couple weeks.. The church is open everyday from 9-5pm (approx)

We are going to feature on  our FB page, 2 soldiers each week, with the hope of finding out more about these brave men.
